Sworn Translation Office

What is Sworn Translation?

Sworn translation refers to the translation and certification of original legal documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, adoption papers, academic transcripts etc. The certified document may then be presented to a wide range of official bodies. There are two ways to become an official translator:

  1. Pursue a course in Translation and Interpreting and acquire the minimum credits required at the universities.
  2. Pass the official examinations that are noticed annually by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Where is it applicable?

It is applicable in many official procedures where foreign languages are involved. These may include Immigration offices such as USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services), passport usage, university and high school applications and many other state and federal government official uses.

Sworn Translation Office

This is the agency licensed to prepare an attested or certified translation of foreign documents. For example, in Hungary, the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd is the only office authorized to offer sworn translation services to foreign documents. The UK does not have a sworn translation office and thus there is no such thing as a sworn translator.

The sworn translation office provides an affidavit with a signature of the translator attesting that he/she believes that the target language text is accurate in accordance with the original document.
Individual sworn translators or translation companies can operate outside the sworn translation offices but have to be licensed officially and meet the standards of the Sworn Translation Office. Apart from a sworn translation, legalization of the new document may also be required. If the target country is party to the Apostille Convention, an apostille on the sworn translation is necessary. If not, approval must be obtained by the court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the relevant consulate or embassy. After successfully completing the translation and legalization process, the translated document can be used officially.
